While there’s some debate about how many hours a phonograph cartridge stylus lasts and how often it needs replacing, one thing is certain: not keeping track of your cartridge’s mileage makes it difficult to know when it’s time for a new tip or replacement.
The newly introduced and soon-to-be-available StylusTimer is designed to make it easy to know exactly how many hours your stylus has put in. The Turntable Odometer™ is a device invented by syndicated “Sound Advice” columnist Don Lindich.
It’s an hour-based timer that you place near or on top of your turntable. Press “start” when the stylus hits the record. Press “stop” when the record ends, and you wake up and raise the cueing lever. The key is to train yourself to remember to press “start” at the beginning and “stop” at the end. When you press “start,” a single beep sounds and the “H” (hours) starts flashing. Press “stop,” a double beep sounds, and the “H” stops flashing.
When it’s time to replace the single AAA battery (not included), the StylusTimer remembers the mileage. Press and hold the “reset” button for more than 3 seconds, and the StylusTimer will reset itself to “0” hours.
Remember that when you first start using the device, it’s an hour timer, so the numbers won’t start flashing when you first press “start”! It’s priced at a very reasonable $24.95.
So how long will your stylus last before it needs retipping or replacing?
A reasonable estimate is around 1000 hours, although the cleanliness of both the record and the stylus has a significant impact on the mileage.
Dirty styli and records will shorten the life of your stylus, while clean styli and records will extend it. Wear on “severe profile” styli is usually audible as loss of detail and softened transitions, as the sharper contours of the stylus “round off” over time.
There’s less danger to your records than a reduction in your listening pleasure.

If you have two arms on your turntable or different cartridges on interchangeable heads, you’ll need more than one StylusTimer, and you’ll need to label them all.
If he hasn’t already, I can almost see Mr. Lindich thinking about new, improved versions. At $24.95 each, it shouldn’t be a problem for any record lover to have more than one on hand.

Option 1 – Return Label:
- Use our return portal to print a return DPD shippinglabel;
- Coverage is up to €500 via DPD (other carriers not insured);
- Returns are at the customer’s risk and expense (if you need more insurance value contact us so we can check for higher insurance or choose option 2)
Option 2 – Own Carrier:
- Arrange return with a carrier of your choice;
- Email us: “Return: order number …” to receive a return form to include in your package;
- Return requested more than 2 weeks after delivery day cannot be processed and declined.
Timeframe:
- You have 14 days to request a return calculated from the day the package was delivered to you;
- The package must be received in our warehouse within 2 weeks after your request to return the product.
Exchange product:
- Place a new order for the desired product;
- Original order must be returned and will be refunded (minus any return costs);
- Refunds processed via the original payment method within 2 weeks.
